Notebook running XP SP2, went off for breakfast, left my notebook doing a defrag. Figured I’d close down services that might get in the way of the defrag being both quicker and more complete. So closed down Skype, SQL server, IIS, etc., did the defrag, did a restart to bring everything up, but IIS did not come back.
In the IIS Admin tool, all I got was Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 when I tried to bring back IIS.
It turned out that Skype had a setting check on by default that allowed it use port 80 or 443 for it’s connection. Since you can really only have one connection per port, this meant Skype won & IIS lost.
The fix, go to Skype, Tools menu, Options, Advanced, Connection, and then uncheck “Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections”. Restart Skype and then IIS should be happy to return to normal.
